“I’m not a nurse. I’m the gynecologist standing in for your regular one today. I will be making my rounds twice today. Since this is my first visit with you, I will take this time to let you know that I may be a doctor, but trust and believe I have my sophistirachet (so-fis-ta-rachet) card that is ready to be pulled,” Connie told Nikki.

Pain just watched in admiration as Connie let Nikki know where she stood.

“I know you’re not sitting there eye fucking her when me, your baby mama, is sitting here in pain,” Nikki said, turning her verbal assault on Pain since she wasn’t gonna have the upper hand with Connie.

“Shut your hoe ass up. The way you’ve been running your mouth, the only thing hurting on you should be that big ass mouth of yours with your loose pussy ass,” Pain said.

“You weren’t saying all that when you were up in my mouth and pussy not too long ago,” she countered.

“You should start charging niggas too. I’m glad I graduated from that scared straight program for hoe and thot resistance. After dealing with your bird ass, I’ll never cheat on my girl again. Fuck all that, even if a chick hit me up with that ‘hey bighead’ shit, I’m gonna block and delete they asses. Some shit ain’t even worth all the extra shit. You taught me that shit, so thank you,” Pain said.

Nikki sat there blank faced as Connie tried to hold in her laugh.

“Are there any concerns that you feel the need to address?” Connie asked.

“No,” Nikki said with an attitude.

Connie checked her vitals and asked a few more questions before turning to leave out.

“You knew that bitch was gonna come in here?” Nikki asked Pain.

“What? Hell nah, I’m happy as fuck that she did though. Now I know where she works,” he said with a smile.

“You make me sick. I’m sorry I’m even pregnant by you,” she said.

“Say that shit again and make my dick hard. I love to hear you say how much you hate my ass,” Pain told her as he went to sit back down.

He sent a text message to his homie who was good with computers and shit. He needed to find out all there was to know about Connie. Low-key, he hoped he could be her gynecologist soon.

  ~~

Pain stood outside the employee entrance waiting for Connie to come out. He needed to get out of the room with Nikki because she was driving him crazy. More and more every day he realized just how bad he fucked up with her. In the beginning, she was totally opposite of what she was now. He admitted that she had played him in the worst way. Truthfully, Pain had lost respect for Nikki, but he also knew he helped get her in the position that she was in now. All he could do now was be there for the baby and live his life.

“Why exactly are you standing out here smoking a blunt?” Connie asked him as she walked up.

“I’m waiting for you,” he answered.

He couldn’t stop looking at her. Even with her scrubs and white coat on, his dick still got hard at the sight of her.

  “What for?” she asked.

“I wanna get to know you, Connie. I know you’re a busy woman, and I’m buy too. I just want us to share some nice convos and eventually some phone sex,” he said, causing her to smile at him.

“Phone sex? That’s something I didn’t expect you to say. I’m not gonna lie and say I’m not attracted to you because I am. I’m apprehensive because of the situation that you are dealing with up there. I know you say y’all are not together, but she doesn’t seem like one to give up easily,” she said.

“You don’t have to be worried about her. There’s nothing going on with us besides the baby,” he explained.

“That’s what your mouth says. I’m not worried about her. I have a lot that I’ve worked for in my life, and kicking her ass is the best and fastest way to lose it. You might want to let her know that I’m not opposed to dressing in all black and jumping the bushes on her ass. I have two older brothers, so I’m trained to go,” she told him.

“Look at you with your thugged out doctor asss. That shit is sexy as fuck, though. Put ya number in my phone, and I’ll text you a little later on once you get home and relax. Then we can go from there,” he told her.

Pain was outside of his element right now, but the sexy doctor in front of him was worth it. She took the phone from his hand and proceeded to put her name and number in it with a smirk on her face.

Once he got his phone back, he looked at what she put in it. He could do nothing but laugh when he saw the name. There it was in all capital letters ‘PHONE SEX & CONVO ONLY’. She joined him in laughter.

“I see you have a sense of humor. I like that shit. You’re gonna mess around and make me drop this dick off in you,” he told her.

“On that note, I’m gonna go to my car. I suppose I’ll be talking to you later,” she said with a wink.

“You’re gonna stop testing me, but yeah, I’ll hit you up later. I’m gonna walk you to your car, though,” he told her.

Pain reached his hand out to take Connie’s briefcase. After he took it from her, they walked to her car. Pain was so out of his element that he had to look around the parking lot to see if anyone saw him on his gentleman shit. It felt like someone was watching him, but he didn’t see anyone. Once Connie was secure in the car, he placed a kiss on her cheek then stepped away from the car.

“Thank you for walking me to the car. I appreciate it,” she told him.

“No problem. Go ’head and get home so we can chop it up later,” he said as she started the car.

He tapped the driver’s side door before watching her pull off.

“If you want something different, then you gotta do something different,” he said aloud to himself as he watched her brake lights.

Pain had already messed up with one good woman, and he didn’t want a repeat. He decided to take his time with Connie. Understanding her hesitation with dealing with him, he wasn’t going to rush anything. Connie could just be the one to make him be the man that these birds out here in the street couldn’t.

Not that Lawrynn was a bird or anything, bit she just let him do whatever he wanted to do. They never argued, even when she should have laid his ass out for some of the shit he did. She just took whatever explanation he gave and left it at that. Pain concluded that he had fucked up to the point that not only did he change how Lawrynn acted, but he had changed some things about himself too.

Connie drove down Battlefield Boulevard trying not to be excited about running into Pain again. She didn’t quite understand the dynamic of he and his baby mama’s relationship, but until things were clear to her good or bad, she would move around accordingly. She reminded herself that she didn’t need any drama in her life because she had too much to lose. After eight years of school, she was determined to keep her job.

“I hope I don’t have to kill his baby mama,” she said as she continued her ride home.

Connie smiled at the thought of choking the shit out of her instead of outright killing the damn girl.

  Chapter Three

Murder knocked on the door and waited for Ms. Ella to answer. Lawrynn had been in his ear all night about wanting a plate of Ms. Ella’s meatloaf. Hearing the locks turn, he took his hands out of his pockets, so he could give Ms. Ella her hug and kiss on the cheek. He stopped in his tracks when Uncle Jimmy opened the door.

“Oh shit. I didn’t see your car, Unc. What’s going on?” Murder asked with a look of confusion.

“It’s in the garage,” Uncle Jimmy answered as he stepped to the side to let Murder in.

Murder was sure not to touch his Uncle, being that he wasn’t sure what he had walked in on. He looked at his Uncle standing next to him in some shorts and slides on. There was no sign of a shirt in the living room or the kitchen as Murder looked around.

“What you and Ms. Ella got going on?” he finally asked.

His Uncle just chuckled and ran his hand down his bare chest.

“You’re the nephew, remember that shit,” Uncle Jimmy said.

&
nbsp; “That’s facts, but Ms. Ella is like my second mother,” Murder said.

His Uncle balled his face up after hearing that from murder.

“Nah, she not ya mama. Never that, now if you would’ve said auntie then I can agree with that right there. Just go ’head and start calling her Auntie Ella while you’re at it. I’m locking that down, nephew. Nobody is gonna stop me either, not even you,” Uncle Jimmy said.

“Jim-Jim who was at the door?” Ms. Ella called out from down the hall.

“It’s Murder coming for the plates and being nosy. All in grown folks business,” he answered.

Ms. Ella walked in glowing and with a huge smile covering her face. Murder watched as she walked over to his uncle and gave him a kiss that appeared to involve some tongue between the two. Once the kiss was finished, which lasted for a good three to four minutes, Ms. Ella giggled and walked back to the kitchen. Uncle Jimmy was sure to grab a hand full of ass and bite his bottom lip as she walked away from them.

“I put a little extra in Law Baby’s plate. I’m gonna call to make sure she got the right one too, Murder. Don’t make me come up to that hospital and fight you,” she said.

Murder was still looking at his uncle as Ms. Ella talked. Uncle Jimmy could feel Murder looking at him, but he wasn’t going to entertain Murder and his questions right now. All he wanted was for Murder to get the food plates and carry his cock blocking ass on.

Uncle Jimmy and Ms. Ella had been stuck together like glue since meeting at the hospital. Ms. Ella was refreshing to him. She wasn’t one of these older women trying to be younger or acting like they had one foot in the grave already. She was true to herself. She only went to work, home, and church sometimes.

They met each other at the right time. Uncle Jimmy had come to the point in his life that he wanted to settle down. He was done running the streets, drugs, guns, and all that other stuff. He was going to leave that up to the young niggas to deal with. Him coming to America was never about finding a woman who excited him with her body, food, and conversation, but that is exactly what Ms. Ella did for him.

“Damn, Unc, you got it bad, don’t you?” Murder said with a chuckle.

Hearing Murder talking to him made him take his eyes away from the way Ms. Ella moved around the kitchen. His nephew had hit the nail on the head by saying he had it bad.

“I want to take her back home with me for a week or two, but she ain’t with it because of that damn job. I’m working on her, though,” he told his nephew.

“Let me find out you’re gonna get married before me. You looking at her like I’m in the way by just being here. I’ve never seen you like this, Unc. It looks good on you, though. I bet you’re happy as hell you came back to the states now, huh?” Murder said with a smile.

“Get your ass out, lil nigga. Don’t you have somewhere to be that’s other than here?” Uncle Jimmy said.

“Stop it, Jim-Jim. Leave him alone. Murder knows he’s always welcome in my home,” Ms. Ella said with her hands on her wide hips.

Uncle Jimmy gave Murder a look, letting Murder know his visit was about to end. Murder just shook his head.

“I’m gonna get out of here, Ms. Ella, before this old dude have a heart attack,” Murder said as he gave her a kiss on her cheek.

“Don’t worry about him. I’ll handle him,” she said.

“Oh, and I’ll let you handle me too. That’s why this nigga gots to go,” Murder heard Uncle Jimmy say as he left out of the door.

“Why do you have to act like that? You knew he was coming over, and we weren’t even doing anything before he got here,” Ms. Ella asked Uncle Jimmy.

“All he had to do was walk in, get the plates, and leave. There was too much conversation going on with him. You just wanted him to stay so we wouldn’t talk about you coming to Jamaica with me. Why don’t you want to come with me, Ella? I want the real reason too. Don’t keep giving me that job shit because everybody has vacation time. You don’t do shit but go to work, so you should have six months of vacation on the books to take,” Uncle Jimmy told her.

He was due to fly back home in a few days. Before he met Ella, his return trip was going to be just that, him going back home. Now that he had met her and spent time with her, that was going to change. He was only going to stay for a week if she didn’t come with him.

“You’re talking about leaving in a few days, and I can’t put in for the time off and get it approved that quick. I have a house here that needs to be looked after—” Ms. Ella tried to explain. She was cut off by a kiss that Uncle Jimmy had laid on her just to shut her and her excuses up.

“If it was worked out that you could be off for the next three weeks, would you go?” he asked her.

That question gave her pause. She knew if he was asking then there was a chance that he could make it happen. She thought about the fact that she had worked hard all her life. Not being able to leave the state of Virginia for the last twenty-five years suddenly felt uncomfortable to her. At times, she would dream about being able to go to a beautiful island to lay out in the sun. Some of the ladies she worked with would come back from their vacations and tell her all about the clear water, beautiful sunsets, and all the fine men walking the beaches.

“Ella Marie, do you hear me?” Uncle Jimmy asked her.

She rolled her eyes at him. He knew she hated for him to call her name like that.

“What did I tell you about calling me that? If I could go on vacation for three weeks and still have a job when I got back, yes, I would go,” she answered.

Uncle Jimmy heard what she said, and he knew right then that she was in for some Jamaican loving under the sun. He kissed her on the forehead.

“Jim-Jim, don’t make me regret whatever this is that I’m getting myself into,” she told him.

“I got this, woman. You just keep giving me that gooshy-gooshy, and I’ll give your beautiful ass the world,” he said.

Ms. Ella knew that at her age, she didn’t have any business standing there blushing in front of him. Over the years, she had gone on dates with men from church and a couple of lawyers she met while she was at work. They all called her beautiful and gave her compliments, but none of them gave her butterflies and made her all giddy like when Uncle Jimmy would give her one. His touch made her tingle, the kisses made her shiver, and the lovemaking was like nothing else she had ever experienced.

The way he twisted her up and filled her up all at the same time was something that she never thought she would be a part of. Even her son had told her that she needed to get out there and date. He worried about her being home alone all the time. She laughed as she thought about what his reaction would be to her telling him about her new situation. He had brought a few girls to the house for her to meet, but never in a million years did she think the tables would turn like this.

“Jim-Jim, before I leave the country with you, you’re gonna have to meet my son. Once I find out if he’s okay with whatever this is between us, I’ll pack,” she told him.

“Okay, when are you calling him?” Uncle Jimmy asked.

After looking at the clock, she decided now was best time.

“I guess I can FaceTime him now. He bought me a iPhone when he got his so we could at least see each other while he’s away at school,” she told him.

“Well, call his ass then,” Jimmy said.

She took her phone out, pressed the icon, and waited for Elton to pick up.

“Hey, my favorite girl. How are you?” Elton asked as he looked at his mother’s face in the screen.

“Hey, baby, how’s school?” she asked.

“I’m almost done with this semester. I’m tutoring a few of the athletes now, so that’s bringing in some extra money. I heard you’re still selling dinners. You work hard enough on your feet all day at work. Let those fools go find a woman who can cook, so you can relax when you’re off. You can even take one of those four day cruises that leave from Norfolk, Ma. You have to take care of you first. I’ m young, so I c
an get up and do what I need to do. I need you to not work yourself to death because you’ll never see those grandkids that you ask me about every other week,” he told his mother.

Elton appreciated everything his mother had done for him all his life. It was time for her to start living now. She needed to do more than go to work, church, the store, and back to work the next day. Truth be told, he didn’t like her working at the jail period. Elton knew he wasn’t in the position to tell her to quit working, so he was going to try to get her to stop everything else but that.

“I’m glad you said that. I have a new man friend and he wants to take me to Jamaica for a couple of weeks,” she told him.

“Word? It ain’t one of those players from church is it?” he asked. Elton always told his mama that the single men in church were the biggest hoes he had ever seen.

“No, his name is Jimmy. As a matter of fact, he’s right here,” she said and moved the phone, so Elton could see Uncle Jimmy sitting next to her.

Ms. Ella was as nervous as a prostitute at a police convention.

“Uncle Jimmy! Oh, hell nah. What your old behind doing next to my mama?” Elton said with a big smile on his face.

“E, is that you, lil’ nigga? How are them grades doing?” Uncle Jimmy said with a laugh.

Ms. Ella sat there with her mouth open, trying to understand what was really going on right now. She was scared to death at first, but now she was upset at how these two were laughing and talking like they were long lost friends.

“Hold on, wait a minute. How do y’all know each other?” she asked with a slight attitude.

“Mama, you remember when I was in high school and working for Murder and Pain at their carwash and barbershop? Well, Uncle Jimmy would call all the damn time. Just from me answering the phone and shit, we got to talking. He would always threaten me to stay on track and shit like that. I’ve been talking to him once a week since I’ve been in school. I was wondering why I hadn’t talked to him this week. I guess I know now,” Elton said, still laughing.

“Is there anybody that you don’t know?” Ms. Ella asked Uncle Jimmy.
